The Crux of the Matter blog began in January 2006 during the 2005/06 federal election that saw the Stephen Harper Conservatives win a minority government. It is about everyday issues in politics, be it U.S. or Canadian politics, both federally and, in the case of Canada, provincially. It is also about political issues in education.
It is privately owned and written by Sandy Crux, a former school teacher and retired university academic. I received my Ph.D from the University of Toronto in the 1980s, specializing in curriculum, special education and educational psychology.
While teaching university, I also ran a private practice for a decade, that tested children, teens and adults to identify their unique learning difficulties, as well as find compensatory strategies and tech aids that would overcome them. I also wrote a textbook on the subject of learning strategies that is still used in post-secondary institutions today.
I also took time out to work in politics for a few years in the mid to late 1990’s to work as an Executive Assistant and communications strategist for an Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) MPP in the Mike Harris government — an MPP who was also a Parliamentary Secretary to both the Education Minister and the Minister of College and Universities. For those who lived in Ontario during that period and remember the progressive liberal protests ad nauseum, it should be no surprise as to why I write from a conservative point of view.
